about

To be played softly.

Composed and produced by Tom Hamilton in 2021.

Eric Richards (August 8, 1935 - April 20, 2020) was an inspiring and original composer and insightful, opinionated, and unforgettable character; who in his lifetime had developed singular relationships with a wide variety of creative artists and personalities. For 18 years he was a frequent dinner companion and beloved friend to my wife and me.

The listener will notice that this music seems to be principally about harmony, exploring the spectral drift between consonance and dissonance. This originates from a process I developed many years ago that generates a changing imbrication of pitch layers that form intervallic and chordal sonorities, eventually dissolving and re-establishing new relationships. The results are not pre-calculated on my part but rather are produced through an oblique system that incorporates an underlying theory of scale manipulation and harmony generation.

As I was producing this Elegy I looked for parallels between what I was doing and how the experience of working with the musical process suggested loose metaphors for the man that I knew. There are theories that manifest, convoluted conversations, paths through thorny terrain, and perhaps a glimpse of the often present "diabolus in musica."

Ambiguities abound!
